Dye sublimation on textiles is a very interesting process and it can take some company’s a long time to master the perfection of dye sublimation, but AMBRO Manufacturing has it down to a science. First you will let us know whether you would like to have moisture wicking tees or brushed polyester. Yes with sublimation the shirts must be 100% polyester and they must start our all white. Just remember though you can dye sublimate the t-shirts to be any color you would like. So then the next step of the process would be to send us your art work so that we can print it out onto heat transfer paper with special inks that are made specifically for dye sublimation printing. Once your logo has been printed onto the heat transfer paper then it will get heat pressed onto the textile of your choice. When the sublimation inks heat up they transform into a gaseous state which intern they infuse into the polyester materials of the textiles. And then wah lah you have you completed dye sublimated textile.

Sublimation Printing on Shirts

How can sublimation printing on shirts be capable of so much?  Well, the dye sublimation process is unique because it starts with printing out your artwork digitally from a sublimation printer onto a heat transfer sheet.  The artwork comes straight from the digital file so all the colors and clarity remain intact; there is no need for screens or color separations like with screen printing.  The transfer sheet gets place onto the blank shirt to be printed and together that are placed into the sublimation press.  The heat press applies high temperatures and pressure for a brief period of time to cause the dyes to sublimate and transfer into the garment.

To use dye sublimation, the shirt or whatever garment you are printing on has to be white and 100% polyester. This will ensure the best print possible. With traditional screen printing, a classic method of putting art onto garments, you are able to achieve wonderful prints, but there are limitations.  To make a screen printed design, a silk screen coated with an emulsion is etched with a graphic.  If the image has multiple colors, each color gets its own screen with only those parts of the image that is of that color.  Also with plastisol inks, which are normally used in screen printing, the more ink you apply to the garment, the more weight and ‘hand’ that print will have.  Digital sublimation heat press printing helps address those problems.  With digital sublimation heat press printing, a high resolution image is digitally printed out with a special printer loaded with special dye cartridges.  The print out is on a heat resistant paper that can be placed on the garment and put into a sublimation heat press.  After a short time in the press, the dyes on the paper vaporize and the image is transferred onto the fabric.
