Discharge Screen Printing

Given the proper amount of time, any industry is subject to an evolution.  The technology and marketplace around the industry start to change and grow as consumer needs change.  In the screen printing world, one of these developments was discharge screen printing.  To understand discharge screen printing, it’s important to first understand how it compares to traditional screen printing.

Discharge Screen Printing

Traditional screen printing previously used all plastisol inks.  These inks were great because they do not dry up so, if kept clean, they can be reused over and over again which is cost effective.  Plastisol inks, however, require strong cleaners to remove them from the screens which isn’t always the most environmentally-friendly.  Plastisol also leaves a “hand” to the print which means that you can feel the print on the shirt.  For some, a print with a hand is preferable while for others, they prefer printed garments without a hand.  Water based screen printing is a more recent development in printing technology that counteracts some of the disadvantages of plastisol screen printing.  With discharge screen printing, you are starting out with a water-based ink.

Digital Sublimation Heat Press Printing offers the ability to produce quick results while maintaining high quality of print.

With traditional screen printing, a classic method of putting art onto garments, you are able to achieve wonderful prints, but there are limitations.  To make a screen printed design, a silk screen coated with an emulsion is etched with a graphic.  If the image has multiple colors, each color gets its own screen with only those parts of the image that is of that color.  Also with plastisol inks, which are normally used in screen printing, the more ink you apply to the garment, the more weight and ‘hand’ that print will have.  Digital sublimation heat press printing helps address those problems.  With digital sublimation heat press printing, a high resolution image is digitally printed out with a special printer loaded with special dye cartridges.  The print out is on a heat resistant paper that can be placed on the garment and put into a sublimation heat press.  After a short time in the press, the dyes on the paper vaporize and the image is transferred onto the fabric.

What is it about rainbows that makes people so interested in them?  Maybe it’s because they are so fleeting and uncommon?  Perhaps it’s because they are so beautiful?  Or maybe it’s because you can use them to create a custom rainbow foil T-shirt!  Okay, well maybe that last one is a stretch, but if you haven’t heard of it before, let me clue you in.

Foil printing is one of the many ways that someone can choose to decorate their own custom apparel.  It is very similar to traditional screen printing, but there are some extra steps required.  In regular screen printing, a silk screen mesh is coated with an emulsion which is later etched out in the shape of the desired design.  The screen is then placed over the garment to be printed and a squeegee pulls colored ink across the surface of the screen; the mesh only allows a thin layer of ink to be expressed onto the fabric.  For foil printing, a screen is created just as if it were another color in the design, but instead of a colored ink, it receives a special adhesive ink.  The adhesive layer is then covered with the foil sheet and heat pressed for a short time.  The foil will only bind to the areas of the garment that were printed with adhesive so you can just pull away the sheet and your print will now be in foil!
